There is so much messed up in this chapter, but I wonder if it would have been safer to stay in the Jebusite city. What a sad state when staying in a pagan town may have been safer than staying with the people who claimed to be God's people. It is a reminder that just because someone bears the name of God, it doesn't mean they are following God. Like Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, "
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve." As has been said, don't judge a book by its cover.
