Numbers 3

Since God had spared the firstborn of Israel in Egypt, God claimed the rights of ownership. God is saying that they would have been dead if not for me, therefore they are mine. They are God's first fruits. We see this carried into the New Testament. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 "But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth." James 1:18 "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created." Unlike the Old Testament where the Levites took the place of the firstborn (firstfruits), we are God's priests and we are the sanctified ones (Rev. 5:10; 1 Peter 2:1, 9; 2 Timothy 2:12, 21; Romans 8:29). Here God is beginning to give a picture of what he will do in His people.
